"Donnie Baseball" rose from a long-shot 19th round draft pick in 1979 to become the 10th captain to be named by the Yankees in their storied history. The premier first baseman of his era (1982-1995), Mattingly won nine Gold Gloves, appeared in six All-Star Games and hit .307 over 14 seasons. In 1985 he earned American League Most Valuable Player honors when he hit .324 with 35 home runs and league leading 145 RBI. The Yankees retired his number 23 in 1997.
