momentus occasion for Canadians April 12, 2008 39 out of 39 found this review helpful
After many years of frustration and a few close calls Canada finally had a team that raised a World Championship banner. Although the Montreal Expos almost got to the World Series one or twice. It was the upstart Toronto Blue Jays that in 1992 brought a Canadian team to the World Series and won it in their first try! Toronto had assembled a very strong team as is shown by their ability to repeat in 1993 against the Phillies. Ironically the Expos finally put together a dominant team in 1994 that looked to be headed for the World Series but the baseball strike destroyed their chances and many think it killed the team. When baseball returned, the Expos did not return to greatness and frustrated fans stopped attending their games. It got so bad that the Expos started playing some of their home games Puerto Rico and eventually they moved to Washington D.C. Thanks to the consecutive World Championships the Blue Jays became very popular in Canada. After the strike they were able to stay competitive. But in the late 1990s the Division got very tough with the Yankees and Red Sox leading the way. So although Toronto has not been to the World Series since 1993 they have been an exciting and competitive team and had enough money to attract Roger Clemens there for a few years.
