This series may have been a surprise to many as the defending champion Oakland As with the power of Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire figured to be too powerful for the upstart Reds to handle. But the Reds were tenacious and scrappy and came out on top. I think this series showed the Yankees what a good clutch player Paul O'Neill was and his play in this World Series may have been what it took to convince them to go after him, a great decision for future years in New York.
